The new “Anti-Terrorism Bill 2010”

Friday, July 30th, 2010

Combating terrorism is a complex phenomenon. You can’t expect to win over an insurgency with the help of guns and tanks; you can contain an insurgency through such means.
Insurgencies are more fought on socio-political battle grounds. On one hand where a change in social values and norms is required to refrain people from adapting violent means, a change in government policy addresses the imminent needs that may arise during the counter-insurgency operation. On July 29th 2010, the new “Anti-terrorism Bill” was presented in the national assembly. According to the bill, those who run illegal FM stations will be tried under the Anti-Terrorism Bill since according to the bill resistance against law enforcement agencies will be considered an act of terrorism. This was one of the ways terrorists exploited to indoctrinate the local public in Swat and a step against this is appreciated.
The proposed bill will assist in curbing terrorism. Anti terror polices need to be broad based and they should not be aimed at fighting terrorists alone but also counter the social factors that contribute towards extremism.
