This week’s Outlook magazine has a number of Pakistan related stories including a profile of Generation Next of the Bhuttos as well as a review of Dr. Ayesha’s book. The review of Military Inc is a short tongue in cheek piece which is more of an opinion piece rather than a book review. The book review does not mention what topics have been focused upon by Dr. Ayesha nor do we get to know the actual meat of the book. Instead, we are privy to Raja Menon’s personal comments such as ,“ So mind-boggling is the range that one might like to encourage the Pakistani armed forces to go entirely commercial, ditch their uniforms and give peace with India a chance.”Perhaps Raja Menon needs to be reminded that the idea is to do a BOOK review and not a review of his personal thoughts. Yes, we do sound angry but more than anger it is frustration that increasingly people are not focussing on the contents of Military Inc. Rather there are personal opinions flying around like there is no tomorrow.
Ayesha has examined how the Army run corporations have evolved. She has examined the political and khaki nexus , has examined the economic and political cost of this state of affairs among other things. However, no one is focussing on this.
There is also an interesting article on Balochistan which is superficial in it’s analysis but good in compilation of the number of violent attacks that have taken place post Nawab Bugti’s death last year. Have a read ……
While I appreciate your annoyance at how a book could be such a polarising factor. However you have to look at the timing, i suspect it will be sometime before Dr Ayeshas book gets seen in a constructive light.
Musharraf Intentions:
If you look at today’s situation of our country, the CJP issue, 12 May in Karahi and the restrictions on Media, they sound a bit intentional.
I know probably you couldn’t agree with me in the first place but after reading all this, you will see it does make sence what I am trying to say.
The 5 years of our President is comming to an end, Musharraf tried his level best to have a Deal with the PPP in which case he would have resigned from the army and enjoy the presidency for another 5 years term but no fruitfull results. So he thought of anyother way out, which is to make the law and order situation of the country worst to an extent that there becomes a need for the Marshall-law. He intentionally supported the MQM in the activities which took place on 12 May in Karachi, then soon after that he put restrictions of Media and the reason was to create the situation more worst.
Now if you see, the judiciary is disturbed on the other hand there is voilence in the country, Media is pressurised, and along with that he is trying to put more restrictions on the opposition leaders too. All this leads to one solution which is Marshall-law, and with that he will achieve what he wants i.e he will still be in power running the country.
Last week he had a meeting with the Q-League and he was quite upset from them, saying you didnt supported me in all these crisis. He mentioned some of the members and said they were with the opposition. This shows he wants to say ByeBye to the Q-League, that now he doesn’t need them anymore.
On the other hand in the same week, he had a meeting with all the senior General’s in the GHQ (Rawalpindi). In this meeting he might have told them to get ready for the Marshall-law.
He is doing all this for his own interest, he is least bothered about our country. I don’t know what he wants, how much is his greed. The country is going towards worst conditions day-by-day. Why don’t he descently announce for a fair elections and let the nation decide what they think better for their country. He would have made enough in this time during his power, he should better relax and enjoy the rest of his life with his family. To be honest it is shame calling him a citizen of our country, so forget about calling him the President. One can only pray for Pakistan now.
Thanks for reading, will be waiting for you comments.
Your comments resonate with what Dr. Farrukh Saleem wrote in his End Piece in THE NEWS on Sunday, June 10th. The gist of it was that he was asking Mushraff to step down and we would name all the roads etc after him to ensure that he remains famous (infamous) which is his top most need.
