Initiative: Conflict Reporting and Strengthening of Democracy through Responsible Journalism

Individualland Pakistan has initiated an enhanced engagement from February 2013 – February 2014 with journalists, titled “Conflict reporting, nexus of mainstream and social media for democracy”. This initiative will in addition to the two years running program of IL to train journalists in conflict sensitive journalism, safety training and threat assessment will also focus on exploring Pakistan’s emerging social media as a means of
(a) connecting field reporters and Pakistan’s emerging citizens journalists and
(b) utilize social media as tool for strengthening democracy through information sharing and press freedom.
Elections 2013 will be used as a first “joint initiative” for this nexus, especially targeting the youth who are already active on the social media but accused of being disconnected from rural Pakistan. Trainings of journalists will be conducted in two phases, on conflict sensitive journalism and safety in Khyber Pakhtunkhua and Baluchistan, namely Quetta, Chagai, Pishin, Naseerabad, Kohlu, DeraBugti, JalMagsi, Jaffarabad, Khuzdar, Kalat, Awaran, Kharan, Lasbela, Chaman, Killa Abdullah, Peshawar, Charsadda, Nowshera, Mansera, Abbotabad, Kalat and Swat. It is envisaged that a total of 275 journalists will participate in the initial training sessions. Master Trainers from the previous engagement will be utilized as Assistant Trainers during 2013-14.Out of these 60 media personnel will be nominated for the second phase of workshops and to be trained as master trainers. In addition, focus group discussions, interviews and interactive sessions will be conducted focusing on conflict and democratic reporting and need for an understanding between journalists and bloggers.

| 200 participants, 24 districts, 13 episodes and final 20 ambassadors of peace. Individualland Pakistan through the initiative of “Young Ambassadors of Peace” aims at engaging the youth in peace building through a number of activities spanning over one year. Students between the ages of 16 – 19 years from throughout Pakistan are going to compete in district, provincial and national level speech competitions. The final 20 participants will be crowned as Young Ambassadors of Peace, who will further go through vigorous capacity building. Out of these 10 individuals will be selected as travelling ambassadors. Through this initiative the young generation will not only have the opportunity to demonstrate their skills, but will also interact with their contemporaries from throughout the country. The entire initiative will be transformed into a 13 episodes reality show, which will be aired on satellite and terrestrial channels. | |||

Individualland Pakistan (IL-Pakistan) with the support of National Endowment for Democracy (NED), has taken on the initiative of “Conflict Reporting and Strengthening of Democracy through Responsible Journalism”. The objectives of this project are to strengthen the conflict reporting skills of local media personnel in Baluchistan, Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and Khyber Pakhtunkhua and sensitizing them on the role of responsible reporting in strengthening of democracy, while also promoting and encouraging journalists, media outlets and associations towards development of a paradigm, regarding the role of journalism in strengthening of democratic values and practices in Pakistan. Project Title: National Project for Participatory Citizen-Police interaction & training for improved policing of Human Rights Violations & advocating Police Policy Reforms
After the successful completion of the National Project for Participatory Citizen-Police interaction & training for improved policing of Human Rights Violations & advocating Police Policy Reforms 2009-2010 the project got an extension of another year. This year too Shehri-CBE through subcontracting to IL, seeks to sensitize policemen from all over Pakistan on human rights and also seeks to lobby the government for better policing reforms. This project will be conducted in the Federal capital of Islamabad and the four provincial capitals of Karachi (Sindh Province) , Lahore ( Punjab Province ) ,Quetta (Balochistan Province) and Peshawar ( North West Frontier Province). This project consists of conducting human rights and gender sensitization trainings of Punjab, Frontier, Balochistan , Sindh and Federal Police as well as lobbying the Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan and Punjab provincial assemblies for police reforms, with a special addition of radio programmes hosted and participated by policemen to reduce the gap between Police and Citizens. The main themes of the ongoing reform process remains the same include organizing a police system, which is politically neutral, non-authoritarian, accountable and responsive to the community, professionally efficient, and a strong instrument of law.
